On 13th August, Charter Members of TiE Hubli had a chance to interact with Dr. Madhusudan Atre. Members discussed about the challenges faced by them in their respective business and got suggestions form Mr Atre. Dr. Madhusudan V. Atre (Madhu) is the President & Managing Director of Applied Materials India. As the leader of the Applied Materials India leadership team, he is responsible for strategy and operations in India; and ensuring alignment, coordination and execution of all product development, business, and operational activities. He is also responsible for solar sales and market development solar sales and market development, as well as government/university relations, representation in industry forums, media interface.
With over 24 years of experience in the semiconductor and computer industries after his PhD in
Theoretical Physics, Dr. Atre has also donned various leadership, management, and technical roles
– as the Vice President and Managing Director of LSI India, founding Managing Director and Vice
President of Agere Systems India, founding director of Lucent Technologies Microelectronics
Division, and several management positions at Texas Instruments India, and India’s Defence R&D
Organization.
Highlights of Dr. Atre’s career include setting up of the India R&D operations of Multi-National
Companies and guiding them through growth and spin-offs/mergers; policy contributions in the
renewable energy (solar) space; thought-leadership in semiconductor industry bodies; advisory roles
to venture funds/start-ups and colleges. He has also carried out fundamental research in theoretical
physics, parallel computing software; and VLSI testing.
Dr. Atre has played significant roles in industry bodies as a founding Executive Council member of
the Indian Semiconductor Association (ISA) and head of the Solar Segment, founding Co-Chairman
of SEMI PV India, member of American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) Energy committee,
executive council member of AMCHAM Bangalore Chapter, charter member of TiE Bangalore,
advisor to venture capital firm, member of US-India Business Council, member of the Solar Energy
Committee of FICCI, etc.
Dr. Atre has published/authored more than 40 technical papers/thought leadership articles in reputed
journals/magazines/conferences; and also lectured in many technical and industry forums. He holds
a 5 year integrated M.Sc. degree in physics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay,
and a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. He has held
research positions at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Mumbai), Physical Research Laboratory (Ahmedabad), IISc, and universities in the US and Italy.
